Prostate Cancer Treatments

Active Surveillance For Prostate Cancer

Active surveillance is an increasingly popular option for men with low risk prostate cancer.

The concept was largely pioneered by Professor Laurence Klotz at the University of Toronto where A. Prof. Appu served as the first Australian Uro-oncology fellow.

HIFU – High Intensity Focused Ultrasound

HIFU is a new technology that uses ultrasound energy rather than radiation to ablate prostate cancer cells. The energy is focused by a specific transducer which integrates the ultrasound imaging and therapy to allow precise destruction of a specified volume of prostate tissue with preservation of the adjacent structures.

Robotic
Prostatectomy

Da Vinci robotic prostatectomy is the latest and most technically advanced surgical treatment option for patients undergoing prostate cancer surgery. Assoc. Prof. Appu utilises the latest Da Vinci 4si robotic system which allows greater visualisation, enhanced dexterity and precise control of tissues with superior ergonomics.

Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy is a further evolution in radiation therapy for the treatment of localised prostate cancer.

Assoc. Professor Appu is one of a handful of urologists to have completed a formal brachytherapy fellowship with the international pioneer brachytherapy Dr. Juanita Crook at the University of Toronto.
